No matter how hard White House and NSC staff try to walk this back, this marks the definitive end of the concept of “strategic ambiguity” - if China attacks Taiwan, Biden makes clear that it’s automatically a U.S. war https://t.co/s8PaVxWE3L

Support @potus statement that US would defend Taiwan directly if it were attacked by China, embracing strategic clarity over ambiguity. Exactly right given China’s military buildup. Goal must now be to narrow gap between US pledge & US/partner capability. https://t.co/nTbhoMAD6K

A senior official from the Biden administration should give a comprehensive speech on US policy toward Taiwan. The confusion and misstatements are more likely to undermine deterrence than strengthen it.

I wonder if these are not gaffes, but tactical? President speaks, clearly goes beyond official policy. Aides release statement saying he just reiterated policy. Result: more ambiguity. https://t.co/RLRTKrQvso

How many "gaffes" has Biden made about the US defending Taiwan that the White House then tries to clean up? Four? At some point obvious they are not gaffes, and if you are Xi you assume US will defend. So "strategic ambiguity" looks dead

For the 2nd time in 8 months Biden said the US "made a commitment" to defend Taiwan from a Chinese invasion. Even as the White House once again says this is no change to policy, you can understand why China might believe "strategic ambuguity" is overhttps://t.co/S3tgTX8BJ9

There%27s plenty of discussion about whether or not 🇺🇲 strategic ambiguity is alive, dead, or on life support...The one thing that would not surprise me is if officials in Beijing may interpret the @POTUS%27s comments as strategic clarity regardless. https://t.co/alg0QYvNfE
